A new EU law requires plastic caps on beverage containers under three liters to remain attached throughout use, such as on milk cartons. This has created some frustration among consumers. We clarify in Helsingborgs Dagblad and HD-Sydsvenskan how to best handle these caps to promote recycling.
Christian Håkansson, our Packaging and Sustainability Manager, explains that although it is allowed to leave the cap in place when sorting waste, it is better from a recycling perspective to remove it. By separating the cap from the cardboard and sorting it as plastic, it can be recycled into new plastic. If the cap is left behind, it is likely to be burned for energy instead.
